ROUND 2!

So, I've decided to venture back in to the land of the NASTY.

This time, I will incorporate some of the workouts from P90X Plus and Asylum.

Does that mean I should call the workout PNastylumX Plus...hehe.

I'm also working on getting my CPT credentials (Certified Personal Trainer) and looking into coaching people on Nutrition.

What a long, strange trip this fitness journey has been...

Keep bringing it...

Before/After video

Before/After Video

So here it is, after working out harder than ever, paying more attention to my diet than ever, the best results ever.  That simple.

The SECRET to being fit and healthy?

There is not one.  It's been laid out for years and years.

Hard work.  Eat smart. Get rest.  I know many of you don't want to hear that.  I used to be one of them.  I wanted the fast track to fitness.  It's taken me so long to get where I am, but it's been worth it.  Every early morning workout.  Every bead of sweat.  Every curse word to the heavens or Tony Horton or Shaun T.  Every chicken salad I ate instead of reaching for pizza or a burrito.

You CAN have the body you wish for.  You CAN have health and fitness.  It's really within your grasp.  You have to know what you are willing to do to achieve it.  There is no shortcut.  There is no secret pill. There is no gadget or device.  There is WILL and there is WORK.  And only YOU have the ability and access to those.

I look forward to helping people find the WILL inside themselves.  I look forward to helping them WORK towards their goals.

My name is Scott Guthrie and I want to help you.  Let's do this.

Bring it, Dig Deep, and WORK.

Day 88-going strong!

Today I am a few days away from the last day of PNASTYX!  I've been going strong in the recovery week, probably doing more than I should due to Broadway Bares XXI on Sunday.  Yesterday, instead of doing Core Cardio and Balance/Abs, I threw in the 300 workout.  You might remember the movie 300 from a few years back.  The battle of Thermopylae, Gerard Butler, some guys who were in okay shape...killer shape.  There was a workout that emerged from that: basically 300 reps in as little time as possible:
25 pullups
50 deadlifts
50 push ups
50 box jumps
50 floor wipers (abs)
50 kettle bell clean and presses
25 pulllups

I tore through the workout and did abs later that night.  Feeling good!  Today, I'm thinking X-Stretch and maybe a run.  Anyway, off to my first blocking rehearsal for Bares!  The show is on Sunday, and today I find out what I am (or am not) wearing!  Keep you posted!

Before and after pictures will happen soon!

Day 83- almost done!

So, this is the real 83, I guess I totally got confused on the numbers last week.

I finished the workout part of week 12, with X-Stretch tomorrow, and my recovery week starting on Monday!  So, this is it!  My recovery week is gonna be a little intense because I'm still aiming towards next Sunday's performance of Broadway Bares, I'll keep you posted on what the line up ends up being.  I wanted to share my food journal from this past week.  I took a little from the Asylum nutrition guide and split my day up into 5 meals, but kept the calorie count closer to 3000, rather than the Asylum suggested 1800.

Day 82-facing a twofer, new Video

Hey all,

The light is getting bigger at the end of the tunnel! I'm almost done with this journey and am super excited for the results I've been seeing!  Broadway Bares is 2 weeks from tomorrow and Hair starts right after!  Today I have Max Cardio AND abs.  I decided to bump them to today because I've been very sore in the groin/hip flexor area since softball on Thursday.  Don't want to push myself to injury so late in the game.  I've attached a new video I took on Tuesday.  Almost there!

Day 74-Hitting a wall!

Today, I hit a huge wall about 2/3 through Legs/Back.  Yesterday, I played softball in the morning and some pickup basketball in the afternoon.  This was in addition to Max Recovery in the morning before softball.  After getting back from basketball, I was so sore I made myself do the X-Stretch.  And on top of all that, I didn't sleep very well (surprisingly, considering how exhausted I was physically).

I woke up stiff, but not as sore as I was expecting.  I got to the gym in the afternoon, and was going strong through the workout, upping my numbers on the pull-ups and feeling great.  Then right around the second round of wide grip pullups, I felt my energy plummet.  Legs got a little shaky and I lost a lot of strength in a pretty short amount of time.  "Bonking" is what Tony Horton calls it.

I bonked.  Big time.

I realized that I really hadn't taken advantage of the RECOVERY part of yesterday.  Bad idea.

BUT.  The upside was that doing these workouts has truly made me more durable, just like Tony talks about.  Next time, I will take a little more care to actually recover.

After getting home, I decided to attempt to weigh myself and measure my body fat.  Results are

Weight-177
Body fat-I'm getting low to the point that I"m going to have to start having someone else help me because my readings are too low to get results from the equation I've been using.  Translation-I use the calipers on my chest, abs, and thigh.  I won't be able to reach behind me...go go Gadget arms!

I'm almost to the end, having 2 more weeks plus the last recovery week!  Now it's about getting super strict with the diet.  I'm beginning to eliminate carbs after lunch.  That's kind of rough.  Breakfast is becoming the biggest meal of the day.  Also, with ASYLUM came a sample of SHAKEOLOGY.  I sampled it a couple of times, and it's actually really good.  Chocked full of vitamins and nutrients, and the chocolate flavor is really good, it's a nice meal replacement or last meal of the day if you need a 6th meal after lots of activity.

Anyway, that's where I am.  I will have lots of pics to put up at the end, especially from Broadway Bares, so stay tuned!

Week 10, day 2

Today is the day I've dreaded for a while-Max Interval Circuit.  But, I will win today!  It's coming down to the end, and I will say that there is some muscle overlap in this month.  A lot of push ups and abs yesterday, and I know there is some chest/ab work in the workout today.  We shall see how it feels tomorrow!

Wish me luck!

Day 68

It's Saturday, and I've got Max Cardio Conditioning later today.  I weighed in the other day at 176.4, which is the lowest I've ever been in my adult life.

I did the Harris Benedict Equation yesterday to refigure what I'm needing calorically everyday, since I've hit this last hard stretch.  I wanted to make sure that I am getting enough food everyday.  According to the equation, I need 3300 calories every day JUST to maintain my weight.  Wow.  If I knock it back to 2700, i'm in weight loss mode.  So I figure for Bares, I will stay between those two numbers.  But that is a lot of eating!

I can't believe I am getting so close to the end!

Stay strong, dig deep, and Bring it!

Broadway Bares XXI!

So, the thing I've been working my butt off all year for is HAPPENING!

I WILL BE SINGING IN THE FINALE OF BROADWAY BARES XXI!

This last month of PNASTYX will be crucial!  I'm so excited and feel that my hard work is paying off now!  I'm attaching the link to my fundraising page for the event.  Please pass the word on to everyone and I encourage everyone to give what you can, even if it's a dollar, IT ALL ADDS UP!  My goal is to raise over $1,000 this year and I would love to surpass it!

My fundraising page

Today is Max Recovery (AMEN!) and I'm really excited because I am SOOOOORE from this past week. Yesterday I danced for an hour and a half on top of my workouts, so needless to say, I was pooped.  I'm loving this workout though!

Week 9, day 3

Hey all,
Sorry I've been slacking on the updates.  Last week was recovery and was not my best diet week due to my birthday celebration(s).  I didn't really overdo it everyday, it was just the collective effort.  I'm back now and am in the hardest phase of the 90 days.  Month 3...is exhausting already.  Monday was Chest/Back/abs and yesterday was Max Interval Plyo.  I was totally spent after the workout.  Today is Shoulders/Arms/Abs and tomorrow is Max Recovery.  At least a little relief is in sight.

I was talking with my wife yesterday about the best way to handle the diet in this month.  In month 2 of Insanity, you're encouraged to add 100-300 extra complex carbs a day to fuel the longer workouts you are doing.  Since i'm only doing 3 days of Insanity a week, I've decided to forgo the extra carbs except on the harder days.  Maybe an extra 100 at breakfast to give me extra fuel for the day.  We will see how that goes.

In other news, I ordered Insanity Asylum yesterday and will be doing it after this workout ends next month!  I'm excited for something new and totally different than what I have been doing over the past year and a half!  A little nervous though, not gonna lie...

Off to rock some Shoulders/Arms/Abs!

Day 47-over halfway!

Well, I'm heading into the recovery week of month 2 and I'm great.  I know that month 2 has been a bit of a struggle to keep strict to the diet with Easter and my birthday coming up, but I know month 3 will be more stringent.  I went to the Broadway Bares meeting on Wednesday and feel really good about my chances to be in it this year.  The whole reason I have been pushing myself as hard as I have this past year has been Broadway Bares.  For those who don't know, Broadway Bares is a one night only fundraising event to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.  We raised over a million dollars last year, which was my first year to participate.  The show is a night of dance, song, acrobatics, and aerial performed by singers/dancers/actors/celebrities in New York City.  It's a total volunteer effort that also involved hundreds of technicians, make up artists, and other volunteers to work in the house, selling tickets, serving drinks, and even dancing in costume in the house.  It's a very 'sexy' event, in that the costumes and choreography are very skimpy and adult themed.  You can always tell when it's time for 'Bares' when you see other actors who have gotten tan and skinny.
I had just finished round 1 of P90X when we started rehearsing, and felt I was in the best shape of my life. Well, when I showed up to Bares, I had a bit of a rude awakening.  Seeing some of the physiques on the men made me realize I had a long way to go.  I acknowledged my successes along the way, but definitely challenged myself to push myself harder over the next year to look even better in 2011.  So, here we are, a month away and I'm ready to finish out PNastyX solid and strong.  I will keep you all posted with details of Broadway Bares XXI, which will be on June 19th...which just happens to be day 90 of PNastyX...the PERFECT way to finish this crazy workout!

Day 35-Back in the saddle

So, I ended up taking an extra day off just to make sure my back is in good shape.  Today, I'm gonna jump back into the workout, doing Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs.  So, I will have ended up missing Legs/Back this week, but that's okay, considering I want to be healthy for the rest of this round.  Yesterday, Lindsie and I were able to catch up with a bunch of friends who are either doing Beachbody workouts or are interested in beginning.  It was really great to spread the knowledge we've acquired from doing these workouts and changing our diet/nutrition plans around.  It's great to pay it forward!

Day 33-Injury day

So, my back is still feeling a little dicey today.  Under the advice of my wife, I'm taking today as my day off instead of Sunday.  I'll see how I feel in the morning.  I will continue to ice and take ibuprofen for the rest of the night.  Send good thoughts my way that I can start back up tomorrow!

Day 32-First injury

Yesterday for Back and Biceps, I pulled some heavy weight towards the top of the workout and was toast by the end.  Today, my biceps were super achy and there was a twinge in my upper back.  By the time I got home from the day, I was almost on the ground because it was so painful.  After some stretching and deep breathing, it felt better, so I went ahead and did Cardio Recovery/Ab Ripper X.  I definitely feel better, but will need a good night's sleep before I tackle legs and back tomorrow!

Hey everyone,
I just finished the X stretch and ran my numbers for the month.  The results are:

Weight-180.2
Body Fat %-7.91%
Lbs of body fat-14.26
Lean body weight-165.94

So far, so good!  I'm pretty happy with these results thus far.  This next month, I'm going to try to stay strict with the Insanity diet, as that has helped me achieve these results!

PNastyX Lean

So, today, I laid out a 90 day PNastyX plan closer to the P90X Lean program.  What's more fun about it is that I did it for my wife, Lindsie!  She is finishing her 3rd round (!) of Insanity and wants to do something different before she does INSANITY ASYLUM this summer! I'm excited about ASYLUM, but need to find a space to do it.

As far as where I am right now, I'm a few days out of Month 2, and I'm excited to change things up for my body.  Not much changes except I go to the Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps/Back and Biceps routines, as well as adding Cardio Power and Resistance.

Weeks 1-3 look something like this:
Monday-CST (Chest Shoulders Triceps)
Tuesday-Cardio Power & Resistance/Abs
Wednesday-Back and Biceps
Thursday-Cardio Recovery/Abs
Friday-Legs and Back
Saturday-Pure Cardio/Abs
Sunday-X Stretch

I'm continuing to alternate Ab Ripper and Cardio Abs weekly.  I'm thinking about throwing in some p90x plus abs or Insane abs at some point.

That's where I am now.  Almost 1/3 of the way there.  Broadway Bares is June 19...day 90!  Getting closer!

Day 18

I've been thinking about the perks of doing these workouts (P90X, Insanity, PNastyX):

Working out efficiently (working harder in a smaller amount of time)

Compliments from others after seeing you for the first time in a while

Feeling better both physically and mentally

Sleeping better at the end of the day

No longer craving bad stuff all the time

Being an example for others

Just some random musings for today.  Still going strong and hitting it hard this week.  Next week is my first recovery week and I've built in some options for the week, but I'm thinking it's going to look like this:
Monday-Core Cardio and Balance
Tuesday-Core Synergistics
Wednesday-Core Cardio and Balance
Thursday-X Stretch
Friday-Core Cardio and Balance
Saturday-Core Synergistics
Sunday-X Stretch

Monday and Friday, I've given myself the option to switch to Yoga X or Cardio Recovery, as not to overload the core, we'll see what happens.

Old Results video from Insanity Round 1

This is a video I had made showing my results from the first P90X rounds and Insanity round 1.  After the hybrid is over, I'll make another!

Week 3, Day 1

Hey everyone, I'm starting week 3 today, and again will be keeping things fresh and will do Chest/Back/Ab Ripper at home using the resistance bands and push up bars.

I've received a few questions I thought I'd take the time to answer for you all:

Was there a point when you were ready to quit?  When specifically?
Yes.  Everyday of Month 2 of my first round of Insanity.  I kept thinking, "This is too hard.  I can't do this."  But I just made myself finish the workout, no matter what, even if i had to take breaks and press pause.  The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming.  It made me want to do better next time and get through without taking a break or by doing more reps of certain exercises.  In my first 2 rounds of P90X, I didn't have that same feeling though, I enjoy lifting and resistance training much more, but that being said, Yoga X made me want to quit alot.

What kept you going?
Several things.  First round of P90X, I was wanting to look good for my birthday and for Broadway Bares XX.  Second round, I was wanting to improve on my first round results.  First round of Insanity, I just wanted to finish the program-my wife Lindsie did it over the summer and really motivated me to do it.  The second round, again, just wanted to improve on the previous round.  This round of the hybrid, I have given myself very specific goals with weight and body fat, also to have my best physique ever for Broadway Bares XXI.

What was your mindset going in?
When I first did P90X, I was really wanting a workout to kick my butt.  It was a very regimented workout that MADE me work out harder and more efficiently than I ever had before.  I was tired of spending so much time at the gym and not seeing the results, so I felt I was taking a chance with P90X.  Going into Insanity, I felt that it was workout that was so difficult that I wasn't sure if I was capable of completing it.  It made me dig down and push myself harder than I ever worked out before.  The results of these workouts are amazing and I am very excited about the progress I've made in the past year!

Keep the questions coming!

Day 12-a peek at where I've been having to work out a couple of days a week now...

Day 11

This week has been crazy with the show opening, hence the lack of blogging.  I'm going to shoot some video tomorrow at the theatre, so you can see where I have been working out during the show.  This week, the biggest change has been the dreaded AB RIPPER X.  I've made no secret of how I am not a fan of this workout, as I prefer Cardio Abs from Insanity.  I have been doing ARX for my abs this week and my entire ab region is SO SORE.  A good sore though.  I've almost made it through this week of adapting my schedule to the show's run.  I'm really looking forward to Sunday's stretch for relief!  Diet is going well, may have had a cookie...or four...on opening night.  But they're real good!  Worked it off that day before with an abbreviated workout after a 2 hour dance callback for a show this summer.  I earned the extra cookies, but must try and stay on track!

Week 2 Day 2

Trying to save my voice a little today, as I'm opening a show here in NYC tonight.  I'll have a video up in the next few days though.  Some thoughts on week 2 so far:

Weighed in yesterday at 182.  That's 3 pounds under what I started.  I'm not a huge subscriber to numbers in pounds, as i fluctuate up and down daily.  That being said, I do think it's because of how I've been trying to follow the nutrition plan to the letter.  I'm doing the 5 meals a day like the Insanity diet, but I've added the twist from month one of P90X, and am trying to keep to one portion of carbs daily.  The problem with that, however, is that I feel like I don't have the energy to power through the workouts.  So I may have to change that.

As far as sore, I'm considerably less sore than last week this time.  I feel my body is adapting rapidly to the madness I'm putting it through.

I've got to change my workouts around due to my show schedule this week.  I have two days where i'm at the theatre for about 8-9 hours, so I'm getting creative.  The rest of the week looks like this:

Tuesday-Plyo Cardio Circuit (with Ab Ripper)
Wednesday-Shoulders and Arms
Thursday-Cardio Recovery (with Ab Ripper)
Friday-Pure Cardio
Saturday-Legs/Back (with Ab Ripper)
Sunday-X-Stretch

I am putting abs with the Insanity workouts this week to maximize times on Wed/Fri. and switching Fri/Sat workouts to accomodate for the space i'll be using to workout at the theatre.

Portability.  Adaptation.  Flexibility.  Three things that have attributed to the success of these workouts for me.  I can do them anywhere, I just have to get creative sometimes.  It beats trying to find a local gym, trying to adapt to new equipment, and dealing with gym looks/attitudes.  All you need is a space to move around (for Insanity) and minimal equipment and door frame (for P90X) and you're good to go!

Stay tuned for more craziness, and in the meantime, Bring It and Dig Deeper.

Day 7

Hey all,
It's day 7 and I'm actually not as sore as I thought I would be.  I've been supplementing with glutamine (adding it to my protein shakes) as well as drinking the results and recovery formula after the Insanity workouts.  I also did a little soak yesterday in some epsom salts to help the legs.  That may have been the key.  Today I've got to do X-Stretch, and then it's back at it for week 2!
